The Creator of "The Color of Knowledge":
Samantha N. Thompson: Hello! I am currently a senior Broadcast Journalism Student at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. I am a native of Southern California and I love all of the opportunities that Texas has to offer.
As a California student at an HBCU, I am constantly being asked "Why?" "Why Texas? Why a black school? Why would you ever leave California?" To your surprise, these variations of "Why's" were not coming from Californians or whites, these questions were being asked by Texans, peers at TSU, faculty, and random encounters with individuals off the street that are BLACK. I'm always careful when answering peoples' questions, especially those who aren't affiliated with my university, because I might be the first person they have encountered from TSU (so I want to represent ). At first I never really knew how to give a straight answer to these questions, so the first question I would respond with would be "Why not?" I was excited to be accepted into a university and leave California and meet new people, I thought that me attending any college/university was naturally a positive thing, so I honestly wanted to know.
Some people say that they don't understand why I would leave California to attend a black school, insinuating that it was a downgrade or step back in my life. Is that true? I fail to believe that assertion, but many beg to differ. Here at Texas Southern University I have been overwhelmed by the amount of knowledge and opportunities that I have not only received, but SOUGHT OUT and found, with hard work and aggression.
This is why I am starting this project, I feel like all education has an equal worth, the STUDENT is the factor that determines the strength of their education by going over and beyond what is asked of them in a class syllabus or society.
